Handwriting: A blog meme

This post was inspired by Kris over at Because or Why Not.  She posted the meme and I thought it was a great idea.  She didn’t tag anyone, but said that if we were interested, to mention her, so I did (besides, I like her blog).

I don’t know if this meme has a particular name, but essentially it is about making the blog a little more personal by answering a few questions and writing them out by hand.  Many times in the past I have mentioned that I enjoy writing by hand.  I write letters all summer to friends.  I used to write home to my girlfriend-now-fiancee, but now she works at camp.  So, if any of my readers want a letter, all you have to do is writ to me.  The address for the summer is here on my blog somewhere.

What a Decade has in Store

You're Going Places BabyToday I was given another award type thing from the wonderful Debbie over at Debbie: The College Years.  Debbie is another theatre person, in fact she is currently studying theatre.  We theatre people seem to have a knack for finding eachother in the world, it is a very bizarre and cool thing.  This award is the “You are Going Places Baby” award which I suppose is kind of more like a meme than an award, but hey, we don’t have to play down calling it an award!  Who doesn’t like to be loved a little, right?  The idea behind this one is to share where you see yourself in ten years and then pass the award on to ten people.  I think that I can handle that.

I actually get asked often what I want to be when I grow up.  I started to find that a little odd after I graduated from college and got a job.  I mean, I am doing what I love to do, what I went to school for, and I am enjoying doing it.  I am working at a great theatre and living in a fun place, and I am happy.  The fact that I have a job, support myself, and live on the other side of the country from my parents makes me feel pretty grown up.  However, I am pretty sure that I can’t really stay where I am forever.

Ten years from now I will be 36 years old and certainly see myself still working in some aspect of the theatre/entertainment industry.  I have always thought that at some point in my life I would end up back in the academic world, teaching theatre, and it wouldn’t surprise me if I was doing that within ten years.  In this industry you often have to move out in order to move up.  Don’t get me wrong, I love my job and where I work now, but I think that in order to continue to grow as a professional I will have to move on eventually.

People often ask if I see myself ending up on Broadway.  To be honest, I am not sure if that is the kind of theatre that I really want to be doing.  Sure, there is lots of money to be had working on the big commercial shows, but it is a very different beast than the theatre that we produce on the regional level.  I also just don’t really see myself living in New York City and being happy.  I know that there are plenty of people who love being in NYC, but of all the times that I have been there, I could never see myself living there.  A vacation there for a few days, not so bad.  Living there, I just don’t think so.

Hopefully within ten years I will have settled in to whatever job I have to the point where I can be happily married to my wonderful girlfriend.  I am not sure if children will be on the table at that point, I suppose it would depend on what we were both doing, but it it possible.  I certainly would like to have a family at some point down the road.  When you live in Utah, you are the odd-ball-out when you are my age, not married, and don’t have at least two kids, but hey, I was always the odd-ball!

In general, I am not really a person who does a lot of planning of things far in advance.  I like to live life as it comes at me.  I don’t spend a lot of time worrying or even really thinking about the future.  I feel like if you are too concerned with where you see yourself that you don’t spend enough time where you are.  Life is relatively short and if you don’t enjoy the now and only work towards your “ideal future,” will you really feel fulfilled when you get there (if you get there)?  I am very much a person who lives by the saying: “We’ll cross that bridge when we get there!”

I suppose my answer to where I see myself a decade from now is a little ambiguous, but that is how it is in my mind.  The future is what it will be!  So, the lucky people who I would like to pass this little award on to are:

    Me in Three

I was just tagged by Risha from Epitaph for a Heart in a cool little meme that has been going around where you have to describe yourself in groups of three things.  Seeing as I don’t think I have ever really blogged about me in a “this is who I am” kind of way, this might be interesting.  I also get to tag three more people and that could be tricky in picking people who have not been tagged yet.  So, here we go.  Oh, I should mention, and I hope that it is OK, but I changed a couple of the topics, I don’t know if this has any real rules.

Three names I am known by:

    1. Alex – Of course, this is what most people call me on a day-to-day basis
    2. Lex – Coined (well not really) by one of my neighbors when I was in elementary school.  I still hear it every now and then.
    3. IceWolf08 – Most of my internet friends know me by this name, it has been my handle since I can remember.  Why the 08? Well, at the time, IceWolf was already taken so I added the 08 which was my house number.

Three Cities I Have Lived In:

    1. Newton, MA – This is where I grew up, and much of my family still lives there or close.
    2. Ithaca, NY – I spent four years living in Ithaca while I was at school at Ithaca College.
    3. Salt Lake City, UT – Where I live now.  I really enjoy living and working here!

Three TV Shows that I Watch (currently):

    1. Stargate Universe – I really enjoy all shows Stargate.
    2. Glee – Yes, I am a “gleek”
    3. CSI – Only the original Las Vegas, I can’t stand the other two!

    Three Favorite Sci-Fi Shows:

    1. Stargate – Woot! This is it’s own trifecta: SG-1, Atlantis, Universe!
    2. Eureka – I can’t wait for this show to start back up this summer
    3. Battlestar Galactica – The new series, although the original was fun.  I also like Caprica, but I am not sure that it would belong on my top three.

    Favorite Books/Series:

    1. His Dark Materials – Yet another trilogy in itself, consisting of: The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass.
    2. The Belgariad Series
    3. The Sword of Truth Series

Favorite Theatre Shows I Have Seen:

    1. Disney’s The Lion King
    2. Avenue Q
    3. Ragtime

Favorite Theatre Shows That I Have Worked On:

    1. The Producers
    2. The Yellow Leaf
    3. Les Miserables

    Three Favorite Outdoor Activities:

    1. Skiing – There is just nothing better than carving it up on the slopes!
    2. Hiking – Sometimes you just need to get out and see nature.
    3. Swimming – What can i say, I love being in and on the water

Three Places I Want to Visit:

    1. Alaska – It has always been a dream of mine to go to Alaska.
    2. Antarctica – I don’t really know why, but it has always fascinated me.  Plus it would be cool to see penguins (though I hear they don’t smell so nice)
    3. Australia – I just want to go.

Apparently I have a list of places all with A names, interesting…

Three Things I am Looking Forward to in the Next 12 Months:

    1. Going back to summer camp – I love working at camp
    2. Producing RENT at the theatre
    3. Seeing my parent’s new puppies!

Now, if you count up my lists of threes, there are ten, not a number divisible by three.  However if you count up each individual item there are thirty-three (33), seemed like a good number.  I also am supposed to tag three more people to participate in this meme, so here it goes:

    Three People I Tag:

    1. Ruth over at Ruthie’s Ramblings
    2. Angela over at Almost Incoherent Ramblings
    3. Scott over at blizblazbliblog

    Have fun guys!
