DRM, P2P, Sharing

Just a heads up, this post could turn into a bit of a rant.

Recently I noticed that I was having issues connecting with the wireless network that has been deployed where I work.  For the sake of privacy I won’t name any of the organizations involved, just know that my direct employer operates under the umbrella of a larger entity who maintains the networks and all the IT stuff.

In any event, I sent the helpdesk an email to ask them what the story was with with my account.  This of course is after I spent about a week trying to figure out what was wrong with my computer.  I messed around with preferences and settings, re-ran the setup utility that the IT department provides, and nothing worked.  I still could not connect on any of my devices.  So, I emailed the helpdesk, and the response that I got was that my service was disconnected for downloading copyrighted material.

Well, first of all, according to the information that was sent to me from the helpdesk, the instance that they are talking about would have occurred at a time that I was not on the campus.  The timestamp that they sent me was about 2 hours after I would have left work for the day.  Not to mention the fact that the incident in question happened three months before they decided to do anything about it.  Oh, and of course I was not notified of any issues.

Secondly, according to the document on the IT department’s website with regard to Peer-2-Peer file sharing, the only thing they prohibit is the sharing of files.  The way the document is worded, it makes it sound like downloading is just fine, it is the serving and distribution of material that is a problem.  Now, I don’t claim to know the actual laws, I am just saying that the way the document is worded makes it sound like the issue that I was made aware of, is not an issue.

As an artist I understand copyright issues.  I understand that people are concerned with how and where their works get distributed.  On the other hand, what is the difference between downloading a song, TV show or movie that I can record off the TV, digital cable music station or radio?  Maybe if it weren’t so expensive to go to the movies or buy a CD or DVD people would be less likely to download content  from sources they shouldn’t use.

Most of these industries are multi-million or multi-billion dollar industries and they are not making that money on the sales of CDs and DVDs.  The television industry makes it’s money on commercials.  Maybe the music industry should follow suit, subsidize  their products with advertising.  Maybe instead of pretty album covers they need to include an ad for toothpaste or motor oil.  I think if the industries find a way to make the material they produce more appealing to the average joe (especially in terms of cost) they will suffer less.

Then there is the question, what are these people doing that makes it worth the millions or billions that they get paid?  So, you can sing and you have a great band, I can sing too, but I don’t go out and make recordings.  I know plenty of people who probably sing and perform better than many of the multi-million dollar artists out there but they are not making millions.

The problem with these industries is that it isn’t about the artist and the art anymore.  It is all about money.  Look at some of the recent movie releases, one made around $743M at the box office and it still playing.  The actual cost of the movie was maybe around $300M so that means that a few people walked home with some pretty big paychecks.  So even if they never sold a DVD, would it really be so bad?  Oh, I suppose they might not be able to buy the new house in Cabo and the Ferrari to go with it, so sad.

Needless to say, can you tell that I am annoyed.  Mostly because it is an inconvenience.  Have a downloaded things that I shouldn’t have, yeah.  Do I do it regularly, no.  Do I still buy music, DVDs, concert tickets, and pay for cable?  Yes, I do.  Now I have to go find some people in some office and probably sign some form for something that can’t really have been my fault.  Will I agree to whatever I need to so that I can get my service back, yes.  I just think that the industries are the instigators of the problem and they need to figure out how to move into this digital age and get over their incessant love of money.

The Human Impact

On Wednesday I wrote about how amazing this country and the open spaces is. It really is truly amazing and I enjoy being able to partake of it. There is a flip side to the coin though. I don’t really know why, but today I started to watch a couple of the Miyazaki films. It was probably spurred by watching Ponyo with the Jones’ last Sunday. The thing that got to me, which I always knew about the films, is the underlying environmental theme.

In some respects it then struck me as odd that people questioned or took issue with the underlying environmental themes in Avatar. I mean some people went so far as to say that Avatar was preachy on the subject. Maybe it is something that we actually need to think about. I mean, even The Matrix makes allusions to the environmentally destructive nature of humans. Must be that there is some truth, hindsight, and foresight in these ideas.

I don’t really know where I wanted to go with this train of thought when I started this post. I love the Miyazaki films. Yesterday I watched Pom Poko and Princess Mononoke which both have very environmentalist undertones. Both films deal with the destruction of the forests and humans forcing nature out. Pom Poko is definitely a little more light hearted, but the message is pretty clear. We need to find a way to be at peace with nature.

This is one of the biggest reasons that I applaud the foresight that many of the past leaders of this country had in setting aside land to be protected. We do grow at an alarming rate as a species and we take over the natural resources and the land so quickly. We are always building, trying to find more space to put people. Not only have we displaced animals, we americans have displaced peoples. It is crazy.

Now, I am not saying that we should all become tree hugging hippies and environmentalists. I know that there are things that I do that are wasteful, but I do try to minimize that as much as I can. I don’t think I could ever really be one of those people living out in the Earthships. I think they are amazing, but I am not sure that I could really take on the commitment. Maybe at some point in my life.

I suppose maybe my point is that I want my children and grandchildren and their children and grandchildren to be able to experience the same beauty in this world that I was able to. I want the things that I love about this world to be there for them. So maybe we should look at movies like this, that many people write off as children’s movies, and heed their warnings. All this has happened before, and it is still happening, and it will happen again.

Sorry, this post was a little disjointed, but I think that I got out what I was thinking.

Another New Blog for the New Year

Well, it seemed like I should ring in the new year on palindrome day (01022010) by starting up a new blog.  I don’t really know what that seemed like the thing to do, but it did.  Maybe it was just an excuse to finally buy my new domain, icewolf08.com.  I would really love to have icewolf.com, but it is taken already, and I have been using icewolf08 as a handle since the intertubes were new.  I suppose the other thing is that it gives me something to do (though I don’t really need it) during tech for the show.

Speaking of tech, we seem to be moving right along for this one.  Working with Phil is always a blast, but I have to work quick because he likes to make all his changes at the last second.  We also have hit the end of our pre-written cues so we are moving a little bit slower now.  We teched through the entire first act in five hours and I think we should finish the show before the end of the night tonight, our first 10/12 tech.

StarTrek: The not quite a prequel (caution: spoilers)

I had no idea what to do with myself this morning, that is what happens when the skiing is over and I am tired from hiking yesterday and I don’t have to be at work until the evening. So, I figured, what better time to go see the new StarTrek movie (http://www.startrekmovie.com)? Everyone has been saying how great it was, I had to see for myself. I certainly had my doubts since I heard that they were making the film. I have become wary of prequels, there is often too much to live up to. One major thought I had before seeing the film was that there is so much in the StarTrek universe that could be explored without going backwards in time.

My first gut reaction to the movie was this: If you are not a hardcore Trekkie this would be a great movie. In terms of almost everything I would rank this film as better than Star Wars 1-3. My biggest problem with the new Trek is plot. Too many holes that could have been filled a lot better than just wrapping it up (very discretely mind you) as an alternate reality due to time paradox. I just don’t see how this movie really fits into the StarTrek canon. In my opinion, even Enterprise fits better than this as a prequel.

Putting aside my issues with the story and how it actually fits with the story we knew, StarTrek is excellent. The cinematography is exceptional, the film is beautiful. I loved everything from camera angles and lighting to overall composition. The scenery was great, and I certainly did not miss the original Enterprise bridge. I also thing the action sequences were executed very well. There have been a few recent films I have seen where the action sequences were so fast and dizzying that I think it took away from the film; not so with StarTrek.

I also enjoyed the way that all the characters were introduced. It is much more interesting when a random confluence of events brings people together compared to having them all meet in the academy or being assigned to the same ship. I think that in general, the choice of cast for the movie was great. The biggest thing I had to get over was that it was Spock and not Sylar.

Here are my problems with the story. If this is supposed to be a prequel or a story of the origins of the characters we know, it isn’t. It is only mentioned once, and almost in passing that what was created when the Nero first came through the black hole was an alternate reality. Spock Prime also tells us of how the Kirk we know from TOS and the original movies actually has a different history, as such, presumably so does everyone else.

If you look at this movie as a prequel then it leaks more water than a strainer. They destroyed both Romulus and Vulcan, and they killed Spock’s mother. We know from TOS and TNG that Vulcan was not destroyed, and Spock’s mother appears in both TOS and StarTrek III. We already had alternate reality episodes in both TOS and Enterprise so why feed the fan base an alternate reality backstory that really has no bearing on the characters we know? I suppose maybe it is the only way to attempt to explore that part of the story without pissing off fans.

What’s the bottom line? This is a great film, totally worth going to see. It is fun to watch and a good portrayal of the characters. I am just a little miffed as to how this fits in with the StarTrek canon.
