Atlantic Crossing Day 1

At sea days are always the longest days here in the theatre. For this Atlantic crossing we have a lecture every morning at 0915. The morning lecture is about the ports that we will be visiting. It is pretty interesting. The lecture was about the Madeira Islands, specifically Funchal, Portugal.

Last night I did do some laundry. It was kind of a funny experience, I put my clothes in the dryer, and was waiting for them to be done and fell asleep. I didn’t mean to do that. Anyway, I woke up at like 6 in the morning in my clothes with all the lights on and the TV on too. So I went and grabbed my laundry and went back to sleep for about another hour-ish before going up to breakfast.

After the lecture at 1130 we had rehearsal for tonight’s show, “Jazz-a-ma-tazz.” This show was along the same lines as “All that Jazz” from the Weathervane. So it was my first production show on my own. Rehearsal went well, and it was certainly a good thing that we had it. I got almost all of my mistakes out in rehearsal.

After rehearsal I really had to grab some lunch on the run so that I could make it to the last safety orientation that I needed to go to. It was really a simple talk on crew conduct. They told us about the alcohol and drugs policy, as well as random safety checks both by the senior officers and sometimes the coast guard (though less so outside of the US).

After orientation it was back to work for the next lecture of the day. This one was with a literary Professor. I didn’t pay too much attention to that one. After the lecture I had some time to take care of some business for the theatre. I have been speaking with the people in Seattle who head the theatre on the entire line about getting a CD player and also having the “Broadway in Concert” lighting cues updated.

After taking care of business I finally had some time to take a short break. At 1700 we had the Captain’s Reception. So we all get dressed up, it is a formal night. So it was into the tux for me. All of the passengers have their photos taken with the Captain, and then he introduces all of the senior staff. He is a nice man.

So after the reception I went up for dinner with the band before the second seating reception. Then we did it all again. Last on the agenda were two performances of the production show. Both went well, a couple small mistakes, but everyone was happy and the audience loved it.

After the show I sent a few emails, and went down to the OB for a couple rounds of darts, and then off to bed. tomorrow will be a similar schedule so sleep is good.
